After care- Retainers

Please follow these steps to ensure that your retainers are well looked after so that it may be well maintained, and last as long as possible:

Do

+ Wear your retainers at least 8 hours a day to maintain status quo. We recommend that you sleep with it. You’ll need to wear your retainers for longer if you recently finished Invisalign or braces treatment

+ After waking up: clean the retainer using under the tap using COLD water, use liquid soap or dishwashing liquid with a standard toothbrush

+ Get a bowl/cup and immerse your retainer in cold water. Follow the instructions to put your retainer cleansing tablets (we recommend polident retainer and mouthguard) into the water. We recommend doing this when you’re at home and while eating your meals (i.e., dinner)

+ Rinse your retainer and mouth between eating or meals, as food getting stuck between retainers will make you get dental decay easier. If you’re in a situation where brushing your teeth is inconvenient, we recommend rinsing your mouth with tap water to get rid of food debris.

+ Always store your retainer in the provided mouthguard box whenever you’re not wearing it.

Don't

-    Eat with your retainers! (They are not designed to be used that way)
-    Ideally: don’t wear your retainers if you are doing contact sports and switch to a mouthguard instead (if you wear full time)
-    Rinse or soak the retainer in HOT OR WARM WATER: will distort the plastic.
-    Never use toothpaste to brush the retainer: it will introduce micro-scratches which will discolour your retainers faster than it should.
-    Leave your retainers on the restaurant table wrapped up in tissue paper – we have seen restaurant staff throw the paper (and the retainer) away!

Notes

  • Retainers typically lasts for around 1 year (assuming whole day wear, almost every day, +/- grinding habits at night)
  • Should your retainers start to crack/break, it will need replacing. Please contact us so that we can scan your teeth to make new ones.
  • If the retainers are discoloured but not cracked, it may not look nice but at least it is still functional

To buy list

  • Toothbrush (softest possible)
  • Polident retainer and mouthguard tablets
  • Extra liquid soap or dishwashing liquid
  • Extra mouthguard holders (to hold the retainers in when not wearing)
